At the age of 15 Gary Klein observed his first bass tournament in which Dee Thomas, Mike Folkstad, Rick Clunn, and Rich Forhan participated in. He won his first tournament at the age of 21 in 1979 at the B.A.S.S. Invitational on Lake Powell. He was B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year in 1989 and 1993. He has qualified for the Classic 19 times, has seven B.A.S.S. victories, and was the 2000 Bass Pro Shop Champion Legend tournament.
